The Kilgoris Story

A Story Rooted in Community and Partnership

What began as a friendship in 1999 has grown into a thriving, Kenyan-led movement that is shaping brighter futures for children in rural Kilgoris. At the heart of The Kilgoris Project (TKP) is a story of partnership—between local leaders, families, and global friends—working together to expand access to education and opportunity.

TKP’s Leadership Team: Collins Odhiambo, Finance Officer; Sabina Lenkarie, Education Officer; Amos Leperes, Student Health Officer; and David Lemiso, Executive Director.

The spark came when Jon and Caren McCormack, visiting from California, met Kilgoris resident Wilfred (Willie) Lemiso while on safari in the Maasai Mara. A friendship formed, rooted in a vision for stronger communities and access to education. Through conversations and letters, Willie shared the hopes of his neighbors: to create a gathering space that could also serve as both a church and preschool, giving children in the village a chance to begin their education.

From the very beginning, the community took the lead. Community church members donated labor, local families carried stones and water, and together they built Enkijabe Empiris Preschool in 2003. Seventy-five children walked through the doors that first day, cared for by Kenyan teachers and supported by parents who believed education could transform their children’s futures.

Momentum grew as the community worked to build schools in neighboring villages, and again when ten acres of land were donated for the Intimigom campus—now serving more than 400 children. At every step, Kenyan leaders and families drove the vision and put in the work, while outside partners walked alongside to encourage, resource, and amplify their efforts.

The friendship that started the partnership: Willie and Caren share a cup of chai in Kilgoris 20 years after they first met.

Today, TKP schools serve more 2,300 students across six campuses. They are places not only of learning but of nourishment and health—where children receive meals, clean water, and medical care alongside their education. Farming programs that provide food for school breakfasts and lunches reflect the community’s commitment to long-term sustainability, ensuring that schools continue to thrive for future generations.

TKP’s story is one of partnership. What began with a conversation at a safari camp is now a Kenyan-led initiative powered by community vision and resilience. Parents see hope, children discover opportunity, and the Kilgoris community continues to shape its own future.
